 Board Leaders' Day

Dave Carroll

Dave Carroll
United Breaks Guitars
Musician Dave Carroll's United Airlines flight had just landed when a fellow passenger looked out the aircraft's window at the baggage handlers and exclaimed, "My god they're throwing guitars out there!" When nine months of calls and emails to United failed to net Dave compensation for $1,200 of damage to his guitar, he took matters into his own hands and posted his song "United Breaks Guitars" to YouTube. Within days, the video had millions of views (it has since been seen by 150 million people worldwide), and caused a storm of bad PR for United, causing their stock to plunge and costing shareholders $180 million. In his insightful and entertaining presentations, Dave recounts his story while also delving into the importance of customer service, social media, branding, and the power of one voice to make a difference.

Bill Harrington

Bill Harrington
A Couple of Legal Issues
Bill Harrington is the General Counsel for The Canadian Real Estate Association. He graduated cum laude from The University of Ottawa Law School, largely through an administrative error, and was granted a Juris Doctor degree. Prior to joining CREA in 1993, Bill spent 14 years as a litigator with an Ottawa law firm. He has argued cases at virtually every court level, covering every imaginable topic, and has notably met many of the cast members of Coronation Street. As General Counsel, Bill oversees the operations of CREA's legal department, which handles the legal aspects of most of CREA's programs, policies and activities. Bill also advises the Board of Directors, the CEO, and anyone else who asks, on a wide range of issues.

Bill is also a columnist on legal issues and a regular lecturer to his children. With his firm belief that you shouldn't take anything too seriously, his presentations are sometimes quirky and often unreliable. Bill is a member of the Carleton County Law Association, the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the American Society of Association Executives and a number of other equally obscure organizations.
